How this guide works
This guide compares brand, design and marketing options for established businesses in Dalby, Chinchilla, Miles, Tara, Wandoan and Jandowae. Zelexis wrote it, and most of our published work is in the region, so we say so plainly and list ourselves first. Every other option is described from its own public website, checked on the date shown, and assessed against the same criteria.
We follow the principles in the ACCC’s guide for comparator websites: compare like with like, be open about commercial relationships, and be clear about who and what is being compared.
How every option was assessed
- Based on the Western Downs, or working with clients there in person
- Offers brand, design, website or marketing services for established businesses
- Publishes work or describes its clients openly
- States clearly who it works with and what it offers
A region with few local options
The Western Downs is a large region, and the Western Downs Regional Council describes it as the Energy Capital of Queensland. Its businesses serve energy, agriculture, government and the contractors around them, often competing with suppliers from Toowoomba and Brisbane. Brand and marketing options based in the region itself are limited, so many businesses work with people who travel in, work remotely or are based in Toowoomba.
Choosing by the problem
An experienced local designer suits a business with a clear position that needs strong identity, print, advertising or web design. A Toowoomba marketing and design team suits a business wanting steady, ongoing marketing and advertising. A strategy-led studio suits a business whose larger clients misread it or see it as smaller than it is, because the position needs agreeing before the design.
It is common for an established Western Downs business to have the stronger local track record and the less developed presentation, because its reputation was built in person. If that is the problem, start with the position.
Questions to ask any option
Ask each option how it will learn about your business and clients, how often it will meet you in person, who will do the work, what you will receive, what it will cost and what is excluded, and who will own the finished work.
A useful next step
Something to try this week.
List the clients your business most wants to win and where they are based. If they are mostly local, an experienced local designer may be all you need. If they are energy, agriculture or government buyers from outside the region, ask each option how it would present your business to someone who has never been to the Western Downs.
